To the woman, he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” Gen. 3:16

The original process of childbirth was meant to be joyful and fulfilling. However, it would now be riddled with pain and suffering.

Jesus expounded on this as recorded in the following scripture;

When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. John 16:21

In the scripture above, Jesus was using the allegory of a woman in labor to allude to his impending departure. Just like the woman in labor, Jesus and his disciples would be sorrowful for a season.

Initially, Jesus knew the implications of the time even though the disciples hadn’t grasped it.

For instance, when Jesus spoke of his death in Mathew 16, they thought it was so farfetched that Peter even tried to talk Jesus out of it.

This may explain why Jesus was sorrowful in the garden of Gethsemane while the disciples were just confused and cold.

However, after the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, the disciples were faced with coming to terms with Jesus’ words, and it was now their turn to be in anguish like a woman in labor.

They didn’t even know what to do no next and resorted to going back fishing. However, three days after his death, Jesus from the dead, and the joy the disciples experience is synonymous with the joy of a woman who has finally given birth after a long season of labor.

Suffice it to say that even though pregnancy is associated with pain and suffering, it is a pain that ends in joy. In the words of scripture,

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 2 Cor. 4:17

A sign of hope

And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. 1 Timothy 2:14-15

There are many themes in this portion of scripture, but the concept of connecting pregnancy to salvation is quite profound.

We know that salvation comes only by believing in Jesus Christ.

So, in the stricter sense of the word, it does not come through childbearing. However, this is not the salvation Paul was talking about. On the contrary, he meant to say that childbirth is a source of hope for the woman.

He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord! Psalms 113:9

There are lots of examples from scripture that confirm this.

For instance, Hannah was seemingly trapped in a hopeless marriage because her husband had another wife who had children, and yet she was barren.

Hannah prayed earnestly until God had her and blessed her with a son.

As a consequence, Hannah’s hope was restored.

Another example is given in Genesis when Leah Got a son and named him Levi because she believed that as a result of her childbearing, “her husband would be attached to her.” (Genesis 29:34).

However, the scripture in Timothy added an interesting caveat – if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with self-control.

This means that it is possible to get children who may not necessarily be a source of hope.

It is, therefore, incumbent upon the parents to raise their children right to ensure they are not only a source of hope to the family but the society at large.

As the wise man Solomon observed, if you train a child in the right way, he will not depart from it even in adulthood (Proverbs 22:6).

A sign of inadequacy

As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. Ecclesiastes 11:5

In the scripture above, Solomon makes it clear that human understanding is limited, especially when it comes to understanding God’s work.

Pregnancy is one of the mysteries that we may never fully understand.

Today, we have the advantage of medical science, so we may have a clue about how the fetus forms in the womb. However, that doesn’t discount the fact that the idea of a baby growing inside her mother’s womb is a mystery that is hard to comprehend or explain.
